Monze Town Council has officially commenced the process of overhauling the non-functional traffic lights at the intersection of Chivuna/St Mary’s road and Livingston road, marking a significant step toward improving road safety and traffic management in the Central Business District.

On Wednesday morning, council officials led a site visit with local contractors to the intersection of Chivuna/St Mary’s Road and Livingstone Road, where the existing signal system has remained inactive for months and the bustling junction of Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Road near Puma Filling Station, which is set to receive a brand-new traffic light installation.

PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER KANCHELE KANCHELE CONFIRMED THE DEVELOPMENT STATING THAT THE MOVE IS MEANT TO MODERNIZE THE DISTRICT’S CBD.

 “This initiative reflects our commitment to modernizing Monze’s urban infrastructure. The selected intersections are critical for managing increasing vehicular movement and ensuring pedestrian safety. We are pleased to see strong interest from local contractors, which aligns with our goal of promoting community participation and transparency in public procurement.”

The project, funded by the Ministry of Transport through the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), includes the complete overhaul of the signal system at the Great North Road (T1 Livingstone Road) and Chivuna Road junction, as well as the installation of a new system at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Road and Livingstone Road near Puma filling station.

Mr. Kanchele added: “We urge residents to support this initiative, which is part of our broader urban renewal strategy. Once completed, the upgraded traffic lights will reduce confusion, prevent accidents, and improve travel times—especially in Monze’s growing commercial zones.”

He further emphasized the importance of the site visits which he said were designed to help contractors understand the technical and logistical requirements, paving the way for competitive bidding and timely execution.
